“Go on upstairs, lad. Ye had your fun.”

Looking disgruntled, Jamie hauled the fur rugs into his arms and trundled up the stairs past him.

Zarabeth remained, clutching her candle, while Egan lounged against the door frame. This was the first time they’d been alone together since the stone circle.

“I’ve been meaning to ask ye …” Egan rumbled, his voice low.

Zarabeth’s heart beat faster. “Yes?”

“Where is Valentin today? I haven’t seen him.” Disappointment bit her. “I don’t know. I’ve not seen him either.”

“Wel , if ye do, tel him I’m looking for him.” She swal owed. “I wil .”

He seemed to have forgotten al about pressing her against the stone and ravishing her mouth. She hadn’t forgotten. She spent restless nights remembering the precise placement of his hands on her, and how he’d tasted.

“Come upstairs with me,” he said. “This place is dank.”

Her heart wished he’d meant go al the way upstairs with him, to his own room high in the castle, to make love with her. She knew he meant only that she should return to the kitchen, where the fire kept away the damp.

She snatched up the whiskey she’d come to fetch and started past him. He didn’t move. When she was on the stair above him, she looked at him, nearly eye-to-eye.

His eyes were so dark in the shadows, gold flecks caught by the candlelight. She wished she knew whether he thought about their kisses or if they were a passing fancy for him.

Most people showed what they were thinking in their faces or eyes or the way they held their bodies. Real y, it wasn’t difficult to read people at al , even when she shielded herself from their direct thoughts.

Not Egan. His eyes could be blank, his face expressionless. He could show great mirth, anger, or frustration, but when Zarabeth wanted most to know what he thought, he could shut himself like an oyster.

His eyes betrayed nothing now. Stopping herself from heaving a sigh, she turned and walked up the stairs.

She felt his warm fingers on her elbow, guiding her up as he came behind her, but he released her at the top and turned to cajole Mrs. Wil iams into giving him a taste of the black bun. Mrs. Wil iams ran him off, and he whirled away, laughing. He never looked at Zarabeth.
